Kodagu- The Place
Kodagu is one of most beautiful and naturally grown districts of Karnataka. It is also known by the name of Coorg. Prior to 1956, administratively it was a separate state called as Coorg. It was later merged in forming a bigger state of Mysore. Occupying an area of 4,102 square kilometres, it is a part of the Western Ghats located towards the south-western region of Karnataka. This place is referred as the most astounding hill station of the Karnataka state with number of tourists visiting here, every year. The place has considerable amenities to lucrative the tourists and accompanies their accommodation needs in form of several hotels, Kodagu homestay, resorts, etc. The highest peak of Coorg is Tadiandamol situated at an altitude of 1750 m and the second highest peak of Pushpagiri at 1715 m height. What is it rich in? Kodagu is highly rich in varieties of wildlife species. This is why the place owns three major wildlife sanctuaries, named: Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary and Talakaveri Wildlife Sanctuary, and also a national park, named- Nagarahole or the Rajiv Gandhi National Park. Many of the homestay in Kodagu are located near to these. The capital of the district is Madikeri or Mercara. There are numerous sources of Coffee, Pepper, cardamom, oranges and honey at this place. Also, it is rich in communal heritage being home to multiple communities, named- Gowdas, Jains, Brahmins and Christians, along with many tribes of- Yeravas, Airies, Kudiyas and Kurubas. Festivals Kodavas celebrates its three major festivals of - Kailpoldhu, Puthari and Kavery Sankaramana. Kailpoldhu is celebrated during the first week of September, Kavery Sankramana during the mid of October and the Puthari festival is celebrated during the later part of November or early part of December. The word Puthari refers to “new rice” and is the harvest festival of this place. Places to Visit Abbey Falls Located just 5 km from Madikeri, Abbey Falls is one of the most beautifully streaming natural falls falling from a height of 70 feet between the rocky valleys. It is one of the famous picnic spots and has immense water flow during the monsoons. Bylakuppe Tibetan Settlement Bylakuppe Tibetan Settlement located at Bylakuppe is amongst the largest Tibetan settlement located in India near Kushalanagar in the Kodagu district. This settlement which was set up in 1960 contains multiple monasteries and many temples of the prime Vajrayana (Indo-Tibetan Buddhist) pedigree. Omkareswara Temple The Omkareshwara Temple built by the Lingarajendra II during 1820 is a significant Shiva temple created in the Indo- Saracenic styled architecture. Bhagamandala Bhagamandala is another pilgrim centre located at 40 km distance from the west of Madikeri. Iruppu Falls The Iruppu falls located at a 50 km distance from Madikeri is towards the Brahmagiri range that borders the Wayanad district of Kerala. This is a 170 ft plunge water fall divided in two distinct parts and is also called as the Lakshmana Tirtha Falls. |
